Navigating the CMS payment program
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has instituted a performance-based payment incentive program known as the Quality Payment Program, which serves as a means to reward healthcare providers for delivering value and achieving positive patient outcomes. This initiative aims to foster improvements in healthcare processes and overall health outcomes, while also encouraging the widespread adoption of healthcare information technology and driving down the overall cost of healthcare services. This program operates through two distinct avenues: the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) and Advanced Alternative Payment Models (APMs). Ultimately, the overarching objective is to enhance the quality of care delivered to patients while simultaneously making healthcare expenditures more efficient, thus contributing to the overall well-being of the population.
Depending on various factors such as the size of your medical practice, your specialization, geographical location, or the composition of your patient population, you have the flexibility to opt for one of two available tracks within the Quality Payment Program. The performance of clinicians is assessed based on the data they provide in four key areas: Quality of care, Improvement Activities, Promotion of Interoperability (formerly referred to as Advancing Care Information), and Cost-effectiveness. Through this comprehensive approach, the program strives to ensure that healthcare providers are incentivized to continually enhance the care they deliver, leading to better health outcomes and more judicious use of healthcare resources across the nation.
Merit-based incentive
If you’re a MIPS eligible clinician, you’ll be subject to a performance-based payment adjustment through MIPS.
Alternative payment model
If taking part in an Advanced APM, you may earn a Medicare incentive payment for sufficiently participating in an innovative payment model.
